What’s Up Wednesday? September 18

Glenn TilbrookHappy Wednesday! Not only are there a ton of concerts as well as some plays happening tonight! Check them out!

Glenn Tilbrook @ Smith’s Olde Bar

Mention Glenn Tilbrook and most people may immediately think of Squeeze. After all, with his writing partner Chris Difford, Tilbrook was responsible for Top Ten hits all around the world such as “Tempted”, “Hourglass”, “Cool For Cats” and “Up The Junction”. Ever since their first EP in 1977, Squeeze has delighted audiences with their brand of honky-tonk new wave and pithy lyricism, while their stock in the music world has seen the likes of Jools Holland, Paul Carrack and Elvis Costello all contribute to their work. Clearly, for Glenn Tilbrook playing is about enjoying the moment, and it’s that desire and enthusiasm that sets him apart from so many of his peers. Whether he’s playing to a room of 50 people or to a festival crowd, either with Squeeze or solo, Glenn Tilbrook still gets the buzz from playing and making music that is all too rare among his peers or those he has inspired, and marks him out as a performer to be cherished. Doors open at 8pm. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the show. Online, phone, and outlet sales end at 2pm TODAY.

If I died tomorrow, and my kids had only one musical statement through which to know me, what would I want that record to be?” His answer: “I wanted them to feel their father in this music. I wanted it to be a recording that really is alive and I’m really present in; a true, pure, honest take of what happened.” Doors open at 6:30pm. Show starts at 8:00pm. Alkaholiks with Cali Agents @ The Earl

Party rappers from the West Coast, the Alkaholiks, are a trio who worked with King Tee. Their debut album 21 & Over released in 1993 was a lean 10-track set that spawned the singles “Make Room”, “Only When I’m Drunk” and “Likwit”, as well as establishing them as one of the most distinctive artists on the West Coast at a time when the vast majority of Californian artists were subscribing to the G-funk gangsta rap sound popularized by Dr. Dre. 21 And Over remains highly regarded by critics such as Allmusic’s Nathan Rabin, who calls it “perhaps the quintessential West Coast party album”. While their second, Coast II Coast, saw the trio working with East Coast heavyweight Q-Tip even while they maintained a West Coast party vibe throughout. Doors open at 9pm. Tickets are $10. Online, phone, and outlet sales close at 6pm TODAY.
