Hayes Carll @ Terminal West
Hayes Carll is an odd mix. Wildly literate, utterly slackerly, impossibly romantic, absolutely a slave to the music, the 35-year old Texan is completely committed to the truth and unafraid to skewer pomposity, hypocrisy and small-minded thinking. In a world of shallow and shallower, where it’s all groove and gloss, that might seem a hopeless proposition. “Another Like You,” Carll’s stereotype’s attract duet of polar opposites, was American Songwriter’s #1 Song of 2011 – and KMAG YOYO was the Americana Music Association’s #1 Album, as well as making Best of Lists for Rolling Stone, SPIN and a New York Times Critics Choice. But more importantly than the critical acclaim is the way Carll connects with music lovers across genres lines.
Nikki Hill @ Smith’s Olde Bar
Hill draws on vintage female rhythm and blues influences such as LaVern Baker, Etta James and Ruth Brown, as well as some of her favorite male singers Otis Redding and Solomon Burke, without being stuck or pigeonholed strictly as a ‘retro’ artist. Her tough vocal style fits with contemporary sensibilities yet evokes all the great blues shouters of previous decades. With the success of similar artists such as Amy Winehouse or Imelda May, Hill is poised to blaze her own trail in their wake.
Pompeya @ The Drunken Unicorn
POMPEYA is a Moscow indie-pop band founded in 2006. The successful 2011 Tropical album was followed by Foursome, recorded in LA at Bedrock. Sound-producer of the album is Christopher Haynes, who had previously worked with Norah Jones, Foo Fighters, Grandmaster Flash, Britney Spears, etc. The style of POMPEYA’s music can be described as melodic indie rock with a dash of new wave, 80s pop and chillwave sound thrown in.
Tallhart @ Vinyl
In Tallhart’s three year tenure together, the band has already built up a solid local fan base and has quickly been gaining more widespread recognition, including praise and support from notable bands such as Anberlin, Underoath, Eisley and of course the aforementioned Say Anything. Bemis, whose band Say Anything is also signed to Equal Vision Records, will work closely with TALLHART, in developing the band and releasing their forthcoming music.
The Hotels @ The EARL
The Hotels were a fictional wedding band that performed L7 and Lemonheads covers during Jordan and Claire’s wedding in the ultra-secret series finale of My So Called Life. They draw inspiration from the Maury Show and COPS and Judge Judy, and also all those awesome Blink-182 and Bright Eyes songs. Everyone should go back and listen to that last Sleater-Kinney album because it sounded like Kyuss or something and totally ruled. Their new single “Make U Mad / Take Me to Jail” is out now on their Bandcamp page.
Collie Buddz @ The Masquerade
Collie Buddz, from the isle of Bermuda, has done something not impossible but something once seemingly very implausible. He’s become the most buzz-worthy current Reggae artist over the past few years. His unique blend of Hip-Hop, Soca and Dancehall underlined with his ever-present passion for the modern Roots Reggae sound has attracted tastemaker supporters all over the world. Clutch @ Center Stage
Earth Rocker is a solid, straight-up rock and roll album, exactly what the band had in mind for their tenth studio album, now that their Weathermaker Records label is fully up and running. The album began taking shape when Clutch toured with Mötorhead, then Thin Lizzy. Revisiting those two favorite bands, they were able to apply their own experience as musicians to better understand the dynamics of their heroes. “The songwriting process happened around the time of those tours, so that really sank into our writing,” Sult recalls. “Maybe people expected us to go more acoustic or bluesy, but this album definitely showcases a riffs-in-your-face kind of style. These songs ended up being faster and a bit more rocking.”
