Farewell Drifters @ Eddie’s Attic
With their acoustic instrumentation and the anthemic thrust of their songwriting, the Farewell Drifters find themselves in the midst of what’s bound to go down in the annals of popular music history as an era-defining, youthful folk-rock boom. Although they share significant common ground with their folk-rock brethren the Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons, the Drifters aren’t content simply to stomp, strum and sing with gusto. They bring a unique Brian Wilson-like sensibility to the movement, with intricately arranged harmonies and atmospheric, string-swathed studio shading that is newly showcased on Tomorrow Forever, the Nashville-based quartet’s fourth album.

Hamell on Trial @ Smith’s Olde Bar
Hamell, who has been the world’s best one man rock’n’roll band since 1989, first in his birthplace of Syracuse NY, then in Austin TX where he won an ardent following, and now back in New York, has written more great songs than the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has hooves.
Hamell on Trial has released numerous (I’m talking at least a dozen, and probably more) LPs on a variety of labels, including Mercury, Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records, and now New West Records. He’s a touring madman, playing up to 250 shows a year, and a remarkably fecund songwriter; The Happiest Man in the World was funded by a Kickstarter campaign in which he wrote a song a day, some 400 in all, the best of which ended up on the new LP.

JoyCut with Special Guests @ The EARL
Bologna, Italy’s JoyCut, named for the conceptual conjunction between the song ‘Joey’ from Nick Drake and Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut, was formed in 2001. This post-‐rock, dark-‐wave outfit weaves powerful sonic moments using electronic melodies and percussion with found objects from the urban landscape. Having opened and toured with such bands as The Editors, Art Brut, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire and Sebadoh, the trio is poised to win over American fans on their first proper US Tour in February and March of 2014.
