What’s Up Thursday? November 7

The MowglisOn this date in 1967, Elton John, still going by Reg Dwight, and Bernie Taupin signed their first major publishing deal. Both of their parents were there to witness the signing since they were both still minors. Also, in 1988 – Michael Jackson released the seventh single from the album Bad, “Smooth Criminal”. Now check out what’s happening on this date in 2013!

The Mowglis @ The Loft

Also Appearing: Kopecky Family Band and The Rocketboys
5 childhood friends from the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, augmented by 3 mid-western transplants, The Mowgli’s are a quintessential California band. Inspired by the magnetism of San Francisco, the grind of Los Angeles and the serenity of the Big Sur Coast, their songs are a joyous revival of rock n’ roll, a twisting indie-folk dance and a heartfelt protest ballad. Sliding from indie pop to country and a host of genres in between, the band evokes modern artists such as Fun., Grouplove and Edward Sharpe And the Magnetic Zeros, whilst having their roots in the music of Neil Young, The Byrds, The Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac.
Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are $19. Online and phone sales end at 4pm.

David Ramirez @ Eddie’s Attic

Also Appearing: Dean Fields
A man and his guitar… honest, unfiltered and true. In a landscape filled with Top 40 beats and harmonizing folk groups, a lone singer- songwriter definitely has his work cut out for him. But David Ramirez isn’t looking to top the charts. He just wants to tell the truth. Being just as drawn to artists like Dylan and Adams as he is to The National and Arcade Fire is perhaps what draws both young college crowds and folk traditionalists to his live shows. In 2012, Ramirez played over 175 shows in theaters, clubs, bars and listening rooms from Burlington, VT to San Diego, CA. A Fall 2012 co-headline tour with Noah Gundersen saw many sell-out shows and grew his loyal fan base. “I’ve been humbled by the response I’ve received from people. Not only do they come to a show or two but they seem to be in it for the long haul. Touring can be tough, but knowing that people around the country are excited to be a part of my music brings so much joy and meaning to the miles”.
Doors open at 6:30pm. Tickets are $10 in advance and $14 at the door. Online and phone sales end at 5pm.

Nik Turner’s Hawkwind @ The Earl

Also Appearing: The N.E.C. and Hedersleben
Nik Turner returns to perform Space Ritual, recording new material, and touring. The unlikely new line up features the former UK Subs guitarist and Co-founder Nicky Garratt and his Subs bandmate, Jason Willer. On Bass is Jeff Pitchinini, (AKA Geoff Miles), from the classic period Chelsea and also, arguably, the first ever punk band Stormtrooper. With the addition of Jürgen Engler on Keyboards and guitar, (by an odd coincidence the former front man for Germany’s first punk band MALE but more famously the singer of the legendary Die Krupps), this new line-up recorded a new album produced by Engler. Do not worry, there wasn’t a safety pin in sight, this is strictly space-rock.
Doors open at 8:30pm. Tickets are $12. Online and phone sales end at 6pm.

Dangermuffin @ Smith’s Olde Bar

Five years and four albums into a career that’s found them drawing circles around the lower 48, building a burgeoning national fan base, Dangermuffin embodies a curious paradox. The themes found within their striking new collection, Olly Oxen Free, sum up that juxtaposition. This Folly Beach, S.C.-based trio are clearly at peace with themselves and their career, while keeping up a constant pursuit of truth. The seeds they’ve planted at major festivals around the nation grow as fast as the mileage on their odometer, yet they dream and sing of home with a yearning passion. Most strikingly, the band’s musical execution remains refreshingly simple, belying a staggering lyrical and thematic depth behind each individual song. Dangermuffin can no longer be plainly dubbed an Americana or roots-rock band. Behind the virtuosic rhythms of drummer Steven Sandifer, the group seamlessly segues from calypso to world beat to a down-home shuffle, often within the same song. When guitarist Mikie Sivilli steps in with a powerful slide-driven lead, one might even venture to call it Southern rock. But by the time songwriter Dan Lotti sings the first words of another verse with his unmistakable light rasp, the listener is undeniably back on the beach, pondering both the world’s pleasures and ills through sandy toes.
Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 day of show. Online and phone sales close at 2pm.
