What’s Up Thursday? March 21st

nickibluhm Happy Thursday friends! We are so close to the weekend! Luckily, we have an awesome lineup of shows to make the time fly! With these bands in town tonight, how could it not be a terrific Thursday?

Nicki Bluhm & The Gamblers @ Smith’s Olde Bar
San Francisco’s Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers spend a lot of time on the road. The band, with Nicki on vocals, husband Tim Bluhm (of The Mother Hips) and Deren Ney on lead guitar, Steve Adams on bass , Dave Mulligan on rhythm guitar, and Mike Curry on drums released Driftwood in 2011. A bit country, a bit folk, a bit rock, and a bit soul, Driftwood carves a unique niche into the San Francisco music scene. Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers have just released a digital single featuring two new tracks, “Little Too Late” and “Ravenous,” and are prepping a new LP.

Elenowen @ Eddie’s Attic- 7:30 p.m.
Though emerging from the same Nashville-based Americana-folk scene as The Civil Wars, Josh and Nicole, the duo that make up Elenowen, deliver a sonic glow all their own. Amidst haunting harmonies and elegiac lyrics, their songs flow with an undercurrent of yearning, surrender and unexpectedly sharp edges. Elenowen made their national television debut on the top-rated premiere season of NBC’s ‘The Voice’. But it’s the five tracks on their new EP that now mean the most to the couple and convey what’s most real to audiences.

Elephant Revival @ Eddie’s Attic- 11:00 p.m.
Elephant Revival is a soulful, seductive quiver of songwriters and multi-instrumentalists that reign from points all across America. The Revival plays entirely original music with a few carefully chosen traditionals and eclectic cover tunes but their precise genre is hard to pin down. This Nederland, Colorado quintet are, needless to say, quite a sound to be experienced — especially when they fall into the pocket of a groove containing elements of gypsy, rock, Celtic, alt-country and folk.

SpaceGhostPurrp @ Vinyl
Hailing from Miami, FL, SpaceGhostPurrp, who spearheads the Raider Klan Mafia, was born on April 1st, 1991; a date that has subsequently become known to him and his followers as ‘Purrp Day’. Cast in the classic mould of producer/MC, his musical influences read like a checklist of hip-hop touchstones – Three 6 Mafia, UGK, DJ Paul, Eazy E, Tupac and DJ Screw. Given his age, the reference to such rich heritage shows Purrp as a child of the digital era; his rhymes veering between the hallucinogenic, somnambulant and visceral, his productions syrup-thick, schizophrenic and refreshingly off-kilter.

Abby Go Go @ 529
This local Atlanta band describes their music as “psych pop, shoegaze”. Check them out on Facebook and come support these fellow Atlantans!

Tanz Farm- Series 3: Hippodrome @ The Goat Farm
An evening length work in concert with art, music, dance and the liberation of a space to reveal representations of the interiority in urban life, including communication, collection, movement change, loss and growth. The creative team includes Visual Artist Gyun Hur, Opera Singers of Atlanta, Georgia Tech’s Contemporary Music Ensemble Sonic Generator, Choreographer Lauri Stallings and gloATL with the music of Estonian composer Arvo Part.

Soulfly @ The Masquerade
Soulfly incite a musical uprising on Enslaved, their eighth album for Roadrunner Records, released last March. This time around, the heavy metal tribe treads extreme territory by incorporating blast beats, violent riffs and wheezing whammy squeals into its patented groove-driven war cry. All of those elements converge within a concept record about slavery—a first for legendary frontman Max Cavalera.
