What’s Up Thursday? July 11th

dalewatsonWelp, the rain is back everyone! You know what that means? It’s the PERFECT night to attend a show indoors at one of your favorite Atlanta venues! Check out the awesome schedule below!

Dale Watson @ Smith’s Olde Bar

Though Dale Watson’s recording career spans two decades, the maverick country traditionalist has never before released an album like this. The new album on a new label marks a fresh start for Watson, a major leap from the hardscrabble honky-tonk that has won him an international following, earned him induction into the Austin Music Hall of Fame and established him as a leading crusader against the “Nashville Rash” plaguing the country music industry. “Carryin’ On” has a more a polished sound than the rougher, roadhouse style that has dominated Watson’s career. The maturity of the material, the ambition of the arrangements and the subtlety of his vocal performances distinguish the album from so much of Watson’s earlier work.

The Iguanas @ The Earl

Based out of New Orleans for the past couple of decades – save for a short, Katrina-imposed exile in Austin – the Iguanas define a sound of Americana that crosses cultures, styles, eras and even languages. It’s almost as if the Iguanas dragged sand up from Juarez and mud from the Mississippi Delta, threw them both into the white-hot crucible of rock, and built their foundation from there, with drummer Doug Garrison anchoring their sound deep in the groove.

They’ve forged a cohesive sound based on a shared reverence for the strong, taut harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel, D’Angelo, and The Beatles. This young band’s unified sound has an R&B-soaked, smart perspective replete with an abundance of vocal talent and songwriting skill. In the short time they’ve been playing together, The Shadowboxers have found a collective voice that is intelligent, soulful, and catchy.

Sons of Hippies @ The Drunken Unicorn

“High in the mountains of Tennessee, Sons of Hippies was conceived amid fellow music lovers at a festival on a 700-acre farm on a sunny June afternoon; their name originated when Brazilian native Jonas Canales and Florida-bred Katherine Kelly probed familial bonds to discover they were, indeed, children of hippies. The duo’s dreamily melodic but complexly synthesized music required the mentorship of Pro-Pain guitarist Tom Klimchuck who produced and played bass on the band’s March ’09 debut, Warriors of the Light,[2] which received the critic’s choice award from Tampa’s popular Creative Loafing publication for “Best Modern-Sounding Record” of 2009.”
