Akara @ The Basement at Graveyard Tavern
Also Appearing: Futexture & Deloscinari
Akara is a symphony for the post-digital age. Elegant composition, detailed psychedelic production, mystical vocals with lyrics beyond language and a deep synth bass. Independent of dance music trends without being unaware of them, Akara combines fragments of Baroque music, twentieth-century minimalism and Indian classical with dubstep and downtempo grooves. Fully composed for a small classical orchestra of top-notch players and featuring the ethereal vocals of Femke Weidema, Akara’s sound is a cinematic journey through consciousness created by Joshua Penman, award-winning composer with performances in Carnegie Hall, five film scores and a doctorate in classical composition. Onstage, Akara is seven musicians and a laptop with a whole troupe of dancers and performers. Akara’s stage show represents a new kind of ritual performance for our postmodern, soundsystem age.

To start 2013, Exhumed hit the road with Phobia and Suffocation for two tours. Then headed back to Europe for the Exhumed European Takeover. Somewhere in the middle of all of this touring, they found the time to write and record Necrocracy, which they released in August. Matt Harvey said of the release: “We think it’s our heaviest record to date and we can’t wait to start playing the new tunes on the road. The album is a bit hookier and meatier than All Guts… and we hope all you maniacs enjoy it. You should find a few more tunes on this one to bang your head and get wasted to! See you on the road or on the slab! Cheerz!” Cheerz to you, Harvey.
Doors at 9pm. Tickets are $10.
Eddie’s Christmas Special @ Eddie’s Attic
Eddie’s Attic presents a holiday showcase of creative talent including Ryan Horne, Micah Dalton, Nathan Angelo and Jonathan Rich. Independent singer-songwriter Ryan Horne will bring it all to the table, playing songs from his latest release, The Whistler and the Majestic. Six albums into his 10-year career, Horne has arrived at a clear musical vision, and it is grand: a really emotional, big, and beautiful record with a lot of character. It’s an album laced with strings, bells, banjo, delicate reverb and thumping percussion. Horne’s bold efforts result in a sonic texture as unusual as it is captivating… and nothing says “Merry Christmas” like unusual.
Doors at 6:30pm. Tickets are $12 in advance. Online and phone sales end at 5pm.
