What’s Up Thursday? December 12

chinua-hawk-for-webIs the day before Friday the 13th like good luck or something? Judging from the stellar lineup of concerts happening in Atlanta tonight, we think yes.

Chinua Hawk @ Smith’s Olde Bar

Chinua Hawk is an Atlanta based singer/songwriter who does not settle for microwave music. His slow cooker approach explores the intricacies of love through acoustic driven soul. Hawk took the difficult, yet rewarding route of being an independent artist with his own umbrella company, CH Entertainment. Over a span of almost two decades, Hawk has produced 5 albums, including his latest 2013 offering, Waiting on Christmas. Hawk’s mission is to revive the music that shaped his southern New Jersey upbringing — Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston are among his musical heroes. His CD release show tonight at Smith’s should make the long wait for Christmas a little easier.

David Bromberg @ Eddie’s Attic

Bromberg’s sensitive and versatile approach to guitar-playing earned him jobs playing the Village “basket houses” for tips, the occasional paying gig, and lots of employment as a backing musician. In the 70s, He became a first-call, “hired gun” guitarist for recording sessions, ultimately playing on hundreds of records by artists including Bob Dylan (New Morning, Self Portrait, Dylan), Link Wray, The Eagles, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson and Carly Simon. With the release of  Try Me One More Time, his 2007 solo return to the studio, David got serious about his musical revitalization, playing shows on his own, backed by the David Bromberg Quartet and reunions of the David Bromberg Big Band. As 2013 draws to a close, 2014 promises to be another eventful year in the history of David Bromberg!

Zaib Khan w/ Kevin Dunbar @ Vinyl

Zaib Khan has people talkin’. As an up and coming artist from Marietta, Zaib has captured the eyes and ears of people from every background. As a kid, Zaib was surrounded by the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, James Taylor and Elvis Presley, to name a few. Zaib really does not fit into one type of genre. He grew up listening to a mix of American, Middle Eastern and Asian music that added a certain breadth to Zaib’s incredible vocal ability. Zaib looks forward to traveling the road very soon sharing his beautiful originals and his nit-picked covers with the world. To truly experience Zaib live is an experience in itself. His presence of stage is incredible and behind the mic he’s a real threat. This is one local artist whose live shows are the total package.

Doors at 8pm. Tickets are $12. Online and phone sales end at 4pm.
