What’s Up Monday? April 29th

AkronFamilyHello Atlanta music fans! Don’t let this dreary Monday bring you down! We’ve got a great variety of shows going on in the city tonight! Akron/Family and The Besnard Lakes should be awesome shows to catch! Maybe you’re feeling like trying something new? Check out fresh new talent at the Eddie’s Attic Songwriter’s Open Mic night! Grab the full list of shows below!

Akron/Family @ The Drunken Unicorn

As with other Akron/Family records the Idiomatic perspective shifts restlessly. From Shamanic hypno-mantras to Noise-damaged Soul anthems to North african street frenzy, from Droning Microtonal Balladry to modular synthesizer destruction to Lynchian Doo-Wop and back again. The sound is propulsive and driven by it’s physicality, and a disciplined acknowledgement of Lineage. Akron/Family is here, with drums and guitars like divining rods calling on Sonny Sharrock and Link Wray, on Elvin Jones and John Bonham, on Jimmy Garrison and Aston Barrett.

The Besnard Lakes @ The EARL

The Besnard Lakes’ Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO had its humble beginnings in mid-2011 and was completed over the course of a year. The story of the album unfolds its introspection on the endurance of the human spirit during prophetic times as told by a spy or two, maybe more. Each of the eight tracks on the album takes off, coasts, and lands smoothly, with a jubilant slowburn of its own momentum for the benefit of the larger picture. The Besnard Lakes create a distinct and dreamy headspace, an enigmatic and somehow familiar placelessness. It happens in such a way that both the close and casual listener find themselves immersed in the generous sonic vision, one moment as timeless as the next.

Jack Daniel’s Honey Concert Series @ Smith’s Olde Bar

A night of live music featuring Craig Morrison (8pm), Crooked Gear (9pm) and Magic Beans (10pm)! Grab some friends, enjoy a couple of drinks and listen to some awesome music!

Chimaira @ The Masquerade

Formed in 1998, the Cleveland, OH-based hardcore sextet Chimaira consists of singer/screamer Mark Hunter, guitarists Matt DeVries (who replaced Jason Hager in mid-2001) and Rob Arnold, bassist Jim LaMarca, drummer Andols Herrick, and electronic specialist Chris Spicuzza. The band’s mixture of hardcore, metal, and electronics proved to be a big hit back home, as they sold 10,000 copies of their independently issued debut EP, This Present Darkness, leading to an appearance on the now-defunct USA Network TV show Farmclub. Their most recent album, Age of Hell, was released in 2011.

Mishka @ Terminal West

Born in Bermuda and raised in the Caribbean, Mishka is a traveler and a sailor at heart. A free spirit, whose lyrics melodies and grooves, are reflections of the roots and culture in which he grew, Mishka’s music is Caribbean at the core, and yet it’s an eclectic sound that contains many elements and genres. From bass heavy roots reggae, to mellow acoustic ballads, songs of love, songs of social justice and consciousness, you have to hear for yourself and experience the music.
