Venue Profile: The Peachtree Tavern and Upcoming Shows

By Gini Strobel

We all know that Atlanta has a great variety of venues, from upscale to laid back, you can find your scene and catch an awesome band about 7 nights a week. One venue that often gets overlooked is Peachtree Tavern in Buckhead. Sure it’s a part of the Buckhead Trifecta, which includes Hole in the Wall and Moondogs, but Peachtree Tavern brings some worthy bands and artists that currently tour the country and the Southeast. This music venue is raw, cozy, and no frills. Beers and cocktails are cheap and made just right. Braves player sightings happen regularly and the energy is always upbeat and vibrant.

One major change to Peachtree Tavern was the switch to non-smoking inside on March 1st, 2012. Non-smoking, music fans are loving this shift that is taking place in many Atlanta venues lately. They’ve also added a large covered patio that overlooks Peachtree Road with a bar for inside and outside patrons.

But, let’s get down to the best of Peachtree Tavern, the music scene!

On Monday nights, there is no cover while Tim Tyler tickles the keys and entertains the Industry Night crowd with sing-a-long favorites. Come out and try to stump him with a song, its hard because he knows them all.

Tuesday nights, the cover is waived and people are lining up to catch The Lee Boys’ Alvin “Lil Al” Cordy’s jam sessions. Invited musicians come out just to sit down and play with Lil Al who is a seasoned bassist and vocalist, known for touring with Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Col. Bruce Hampton, Ivan Neville, Macy Gray, Stokley (Mint Condition), and Martin Luther (The Roots). Lil Al’s friends also join him in these jam sessions and include, AJ Wunder Ghent, Scott Phillips, Stephen Hendrix, and many special guests each week. The scene at Peachtree Tavern on Tuesdays is really cool and worth checking out the talent.

Wednesday nights, aka Welfare Wednesday, is the venue’s College Night. There is always a small cover of $3 – $5 (which is minimal in the first place) where the venue features some of the best local and regional cover bands to entertain the co-eds.

As the week winds down, the venue fills up with music fans, and those looking to grab a cold beer in a laid back environment. While most of the bands are generally of the Rock and Country genres, Hip Hop and Bluegrass bands appear on the schedule too. The bands are always notable and concert goers are urged to buy their tickets in advance because these shows can fill up quickly. Did we mention that Peachtree Tavern gets some of the best cover bands too? Appetite for Destruction, the ultimate Guns N’ Roses experience, will be taking over Peachtree Tavern Saturday, July 28th and you can WIN TICKETS!

This Saturday, July 21st, you can catch the Eric Dodd Band and Ty Bates Band.

Eric Dodd is a Singer-Songwriter with the ability to cross between Rock, Country and Americana genres. Critics say Dodd is best described as “a blend between Edwin McCain and Zac Brown.” Dodd claims both southern songwriters as influences. Dodd and his band have been touring the southeast since 2008 and are playing over 200 shows a year. Dodd is one of Georgia’s most polished and eminent artists. He is up and coming… fast.

Ty Bates is another great Country musician to follow! With electrifying and contagious energy on stage and his soulful, rich vocals in songs like “The South I Love”, “You Know I Know” and “Peace of Mind”, Ty continues to establish himself in Nashville as the artist to watch in 2012. And it’s his birthday that night!
