Today, Twitter released a new music app that uses Twitter activity, including Tweets and engagement, to help you find music that is the most popular on Twitter, as well as discover emerging artists. The new app brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity to the forefront: you can visit their profiles to see which music artists they follow and listen to songs by those artists. And, of course, you can tweet songs right from the app.
The songs on Twitter #music currently come from three sources: iTunes, Spotify or Rdio. By default, you will hear previews from iTunes when exploring music in the app. Subscribers to Rdio and Spotify can log in to their accounts to enjoy full tracks that are available in those respective catalogs. You don’t have to leave the app to hear full tracks if you’re logged into Spotify or Rdio.
The app has 4 key pages: The Popular tab, The Emerging tab, the Suggested tab, and the Now Playing Tab.
The Popular tab shows what’s trending on Twitter. Emerging displays up and coming artists that are building a steady buzz. Suggested recommends artists based on who you are currently following. Now Playing shows who your friends are listening to or tweeting about.
iPhone users can download Twitter #music from the App Store today, while the rest can enjoy the web version, which will be rolling out over the next few hours: music.twitter.com .
