Atlanta's own 7 Stages Theatre in Little Five Points is joining in with the annual tradition of The Vagina Monologues for the second time this February. V-Day is a world-wide event started by the writer of The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler, which is dedicated to ending violence against women and girls.
"Every year it is released from royalties and groups are allowed to produce and perform it all over the U.S. and the world," explains Rod Lindsey, who is organizing the event at 7 Stages for the second time this year. "All proceeds are to go to a local charity involved in the issue and the national charity which is chosen each year by the national organization."
The local charity this year is the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the nationally the proceeds go towards the women and girls of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
7 Stages are also performing a companion show, A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer. Explains Lindsey, "This show is another series of monologues dealing with much the same subject matter, with the main difference being the involvement of male actors."
The theater is going further in their attempts to raise money for the good causes, with a silent auction and a raffle being held before the shows, as well as representatives from the aforementioned charities attending the events to converse with audience members.
