From upbeat to mellow, Holopaw can mesh with any of your moods. This indie band from Gainesville, FL definitely deserves a listen.
Academy Songs, Volume I, Holopaw’s Misra Records debut, takes the band to never-treaded levels. Through three records and a collaboration with Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock (Ugly Casanova), frontman John Orth has honed his gift for lyricism, storytelling, and delivery. Now, backed by a variant possessing uncanny chemistry (complete with identical twin brothers), we’ve been graced with an unparalleled, breathtaking Holopaw album.
We caught up with Jeff Hays of Holopaw before their show this Friday at The Earl!
What is the strangest thing a fan has done for you? or at your show?
We once had someone knitting in the audience.
What is the funniest moment you have had as an artist/band so far?
Being chased around a studio by a crazed session mandolinist.
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Not so much….generally there is a solitary whiskey drink involved to settle the nerves.
If you could describe your music in one word, what would it be?
Smokey
How do you connect with a crowd?
I make a point of making eye contact with people occasionally. I’m sure it is very unnerving for them….
How did you come up with your band name and what does it mean?
We had a book of Florida place-names and it was the one we liked the best.
What is the best way to write music?
The best time to write music is when you are in the mood. Never force yourself to write.
