City and Colour (aka Canadian singer/songwriter Dallas Green) made a stop in Atlanta on October 2nd, at the Tabernacle in support of his fourth full length album, The Hurry and the Harm, which dropped in early summer 2013.
Green, formerly of post-hardcore band Alexisonfire, made a decision last year to make side project, City and Colour, his main focus, and rightly so; his soaring, emotional vocals seem better suited for the delicate, heart wrenching love songs that City and Colour produces.
With a solid backing band, Green was entrancing as he began the night with “Forgive Me,” a track from 2008’s Bring Me Your Love. New song “Of Space and Time” kept things going and “Day Old Hate,” a track from 2005’s critically acclaimed Sometimes was very well received by the audience. Perhaps too well received; Green stopped the song just before finishing it to chastise several audience members who had been yelling expletives during the performance, asking them to wait until the song was over. Later in the show, he seemed apologetic and encouraged the audience to sing with him during “What Makes a Man.” “If you’re too embarrassed to sing, just snap your fingers or something by your side,” Green joked.
The set continued with several songs from the new album, including “Paradise,” “The Lonely Life,” and “Thirst,” a track that Green insisted the people on the balcony stand up and dance to. Fan favorites “Comin’ Home” and “Sleeping Sickness” had the crowd singing along. A powerful performance of “Sorrowing Man” closed out incredible the set.
