The ATL Collective has continuously brought us wonderful renditions of classic albums once a month since 2009. Taking place at Eddie’s Attic and composed by a plethora of musicians from our great city, the collective captures the essence of each interpreted album from start to finish while adding a hint of Atlanta into it.
This month’s collective retold the album “Odessey and Oracle” by the Zombies. Released in 1968, it is still holds up as one of the greatest albums. Because of the album’s unique sound, the collective featured local artists best known for their outstanding vocals and harmonies.
Sadly, I missed the first two songs, so I came in as Death on Two Wheels front man, Trae Vedder, took the stage for his first song of the evening, “Maybe After He’s Gone.” While Vedder is traditionally known for his roaring, Southern raspy voice, he brought his expected intensity down to a soft melody that was perfectly accompanied by the collective band. Jeremy Aggers, Besides Daniel and Factory also shared the stage for the night. After a brief intermission, or “the record flip,” Factory took the stage, singing “Hung Up on A Dream.” Members, Michael Kai, Alice Kim, and Naomi Lavender took the stage replicating the songs distinct chords and harmonies in an incredibly smooth and delicately intricate way.
As the last few songs of the record approached, featured band of the month Sleepy Turtles, took the stage. The local rock/folk five piece performed “Friends of Mine” and, possible album favorite, “Time of the Season.” With their multiple string instruments and various vocals, they recreated the psychedelic piano based songs with soul and a hint of rock. The band closed out the night by performing songs off of the newest EP.
The ATL Collective really is amazing. I recommend at least attending the event once, if only just to represent and support our local music scene. They’re taking a break over August, but check back with us in September for more info from the Collective!
