We caught up with Midnite Panda to ask him a few questions about his music, his connection with the crowds and his awesome name! Check out what he said below!
What is the strangest thing a fan has done for you at a show?
“This woman who was probably about 30 to 40 years old is dancing to my set and tells me that her high school daughter loves my music and proceeds to give me her daughter’s number.”
What has been your funniest moment as an artist so far?
“When I joined up with my team Swoop Gang. We had a photo shoot and for some reason everyone called me a double-dipped Denzel Washington because my skin is rich like dark chocolate. It was hilarious.”
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
“I have to restart my computer after I set up my whole rig. I set everything up, then I restart. The one time I didn’t traktor [my DJ program] crashed and I had to restart my computer mid set.”
If you had to describe your music in one word, what would it be?
“It would be one of 3 words: reckless, aggressive or ratchet.”
What is your dream gig?
“My dream lineup would consist of a mix of Dubstep artists, House artists and Trap artists. 50 carrot, Funtcase, Afrojack, Hardwell, Dada Life, Swoop Gang (that’s my team), TNGHT, Bassnectar, Baauer, Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, Meek Mill, Heroes x Villians, Mayhem x Antiserum…”
How do you connect with the crowd?
“I connect with my crowd by trying to be on the same level as them. A drink here and there before a set loosens myself up. I’m able to read the crowd that way and see how people react to certain songs. I like to get on the mic and keep people engaged, let people know who is DJ’ing and that I’m supposed to be up there. And playing a song that everyone can sing/rap along too is also crucial. It brings that old school DJ vibe, but mixes it up with a new school EDM trap feel. For example, taking “Riot” by 2 Chainz then following it up with an Atlanta favorite, “Bricksquad Anthem.”
How did you come up with the name “Midnite Panda”?
“Midnite Panda was given to me my freshmen year of college while I was pledging my fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon up in West Chester, PA. I’ve always played hockey my whole life, which is considered a “white” sport and I’m Kenyan. So there’s the black and white thing that correlated to people calling me Panda. The Midnite thing came from me having a dark complexion like midnight. Thus “Midnite Panda” was born. When I decided to DJ, I figured that was a perfect name for me, but switched up the spelling of midnight to midnite. Why…no reason.”
