Amy Black is a Boston-based singer/songwriter. She has storytelling and Southern tradition in her blood. She’s been playing, touring and writing ever since a late night, kitchen table epiphany. Riding high on the release of her sophomore album, “This Is Home,” (February 2014) Black set out on a series of showcases across the Southeast. Now she brings her blend of all things Americana to Eddie’s Attic in Decatur on April 6, 2014. AMG chatted briefly with Black to learn more about her experiences.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
Bon Jovi, Slippery When Wet in Huntsville, AL. My dad was a minster and the only way he would let me go was if he came with me. He hung out in the back with the HVAC guy who went to our church. I thought it was a pretty tame show, but I wasn’t allowed to wear the t-shirt to school.
What is the best gig that you ever performed?
Opening for Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell this past summer and getting to do the encore with them. Emmy said we had to dance out on stage today and I was totally cool with that. I was shimmying and shaking it with Emmylou Harris. Does it get any better than that?
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
One of the most recent, amazing, gigs was the Wood Brothers. If you haven’t seen them live, do yourself a favor. What a great live show.
What gig you would most like to play?
There are many of them, but the tops would be getting to do a show with Bonnie Raitt.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
If you mean players, well, I’d love to have all the guys who played with me on my last album on stage with me every night. That would be a total dream come true. If you mean other singer/songwriters on the bill – Bonnie Raitt, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Mavis Staples, Buddy Miller, Wood Brothers, Solomon Burke, Joe Henry — just to name a few.
