RL Grime is hitting up the Basement at Graveyard Tavern next Wednesday May 8, along with Speakerfoxxx and Taste Tester! We caught up with the music mastermind to ask some questions about this new side project, his music and his dream collaboration. Check out our interview below to get more information on RL Grime and the show! See you there!
Many people are familiar with you as Clockwork, what inspired the RL Grime project?
RL Grime was a sort of “just-for-fun” side project I started winter of 2010 as an outlet for me to try something new, generally on the hip hop side of things. I made my first EP around January of 2011, and soon after I started working more with the dudes at Wedidit, a collective/label of all my homies who make music from the LA area, who helped promote it a bit. A lot of my early productions helped shape the kind of music I am making now.
How did you come up with the name RL Grime?
I grew up reading the children’s horror series Goosebumps, and the name is a play on the author, RL Stine. I thought it worked perfectly because I strive to make music that is more on the dark side of things.
What advice would you give to up and coming DJs?
Listen to everything. Dig deep and find some older shit and try to understand where the artists are coming from. Learn from their styles to mold your own.
How would you describe your set?
