Interview: The Dodos- Playing @ Drunken Unicorn October 4th!

thedodos_1When it came time for the Dodos to begin writing their fifth LP, Carrier, singer/guitarist Meric Long wanted to start over. The uncertainty of the band’s trajectory as well as the passing of guitarist Chris Reimer brought about a reassessment of things within the band, and in particular Long’s songwriting.

As a result, the album the Dodos crafted is refreshingly sincere: no computers, no gimmicks — just eleven songs that are beautiful and solid and true and honest.

We caught up Logan Kroeber of the band before they head to the Drunken Unicorn in Atlanta October 4th. We talked about the new record, performing live and the best gig the Dodos have ever played. Check it out!

You just released a new record, Carrier, how (if at all) did the recording process differ from your previous efforts?

I think this was the first record we’ve done since Meric has switched from coffee to tea, so maybe our decisions in the studio were a little more rational this time. Luckily the engineer was still jacked up on coffee to keep us on our toes.

I’m a big fan of the video you recorded at John Vanderslice’s studio, Tiny Telephone Studios. Can you talk about the collaboration with Magik*Magik Orchestra?

They’re always a pleasure to work with and since they have a rotating cast of talent you never know who will be performing on any given day. And they all usually have interesting stories about being hired guns for strange experimental performances or big pop stars. A different side of the music business that I always like hearing about.

You recently did a Tumblr takeover for Nixon Music, how did that come together?

Just trying to get the word out for this new record. And secretly hoping they’d send me one of their awesome portable speakers.

What are you most looking forward to about playing the opening party for Pitchfork Music Festival Paris?

I think there’s gonna be some other rad bands playing, but really we’re just looking forward to the good catering.

What’s your favorite part of playing for a live audience?

People starting a mosh pit to the sound of an acoustic guitar.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Obtaining a clean towel and a cold cup of beer.
