Luella and the Sun, one of Nashville, TN’s must see emerging acts defies any singular description. Music Connection Magazine described them in geographic terms as “feverish, bluesy jungle territory.” Regardless of how they are characterized, one certain thing is that their sound ignites a soulful blend of blues-hop, gospel and rock, merging a fearless sense of abandon and equal parts restraint.
The band deftly works as a unit and every note has purpose, combining minimalist attitude with raw emotion – and even in their most unguarded moments, there’s a smoldering vulnerability that’s unquestionably mesmerizing.
We caught up with the band before they hit Atlanta to play at Vinyl this Saturday, July 20. Check out the interview below to learn about their upcoming record, their most memorable gigs and their pre-show rituals!
Based out of Music City- Nashville, TN, do you feel like it’s been easier to book shows and get your music out there or is it more challenging and competitive [in Nashville]?
I don’t know if anything is easy when you’re dealing with the music industry. Not going to lie, booking shows is tough, no matter where you live. We booked our own shows for awhile before we hooked up with some great booking agents. No doubt, the competition is fierce but, in the end I think the music always speaks for itself.
We heard you’ll be releasing a full-length record in 2014, have you started the recording process?
You’ve heard right, we’re looking towards getting started in early September.
What was the first show you ever played as Luella and the Sun?
Hmm.. it’s been a while, I think the very first show was at one of our favorite restaurant/clubs in Nashville, The Family Wash.
What has been your most memorable gig thus far?
Well, every show is memorable for its own reasons. As of recently, I would say the couple of shows we just did in the Chicago area (Evanston and Berwyn) and Minneapolis. Looking to add Atlanta to the list!
If you could play anywhere with any artist or band, where would you play and with whom?
Too many to choose from. Doesn’t matter where it would be, either Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin.
Music aside, how do you connect with your crowd?
We’re all pretty down to earth people, we have ups and downs just like anyone else. If you can’t tell that from stage, please come over and say hi. We like meeting fans and sharing stories, it’s nice to make new friends.
Do you guys have any pre-show rituals?
I usually do 50 push-ups and some dead-lifts. Haha, all joking aside, we usually take a moment to remind ourselves how fortunate we are to have each other and to have fun.
What are 3 things that you have to bring with you on the road?
Ear Plugs
Sunglasses
Whoopie Cushion
What is the ultimate goal for Luella and the Sun?
I don’t know if there is “one” ultimate goal. I think it encompasses a variety of things, however, one goal in particular is being able to reach as many people as possible with our music and to continue to creatively grow as a band.
