A native of South Florida, John has been producing, writing and performing his music in the Atlanta area now for the last 7yrs. John’s music is a contemporary blend of jazz, blues, pop with soulful vocals. His purpose with music “is to unite all the different audiences of music together and make each and every person feel good about the world we live in,” and that purpose will be shown this Sunday at Eddie’s Attic.
Andrew Chatwood had the opportunity to talk with John Jones, and here’s what he had to say.
What is the strangest thing a fan has done for you or at your show?
I remember talking about my music and where I had been and out of the blue a fan shouted “did you know any Spanish songs?”….which sorta stumped me. I speak Spanish somewhat but you just wouldn’t expect that and at the time I giving a little history on how I started music. When he asked..I was like…”um…no…is that okay?” and the audience just thought it was hysterical
What is the funniest moment you have had as an artist?
A funny moment is being super hyped at a gig and I just looked at the audience and all of a sudden could not remember my 2nd verse or any other lyrics. So I ended up singing the 1st verse throughout the entire song BUT I made it sound different each time!!!
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
My best pre-show ritual is time alone. I can’t be around people absorbing their energy right before a show of mine and I always say a prayer before EVERY show.
If you could describe your music in one word, what would it be?
Connection.
How do you connect with a crowd?
My way of connecting with a crowd is to make them feel like they are at home. I go with a personal approach; I may share something funny and personal with the crowd of just some brief small talk. I want the crowd to know me as well as my music because I think that is important for longevity. I can’t just get up in front of people and sing.
How did you decide on your band name?
Currently, my band name is mine and probably will stay that way for awhile. However, I am in the process of trying to form a band so that could evolve depending on which direction I go in.
What is the best way to write music?
I’ve learned for me the best way to write music is to be “in the moment.” I’ve had songs I’ve toiled over for years and then the 5min ditties..of course the 5 min. numbers generally get the best response. Also, I’ve learned not try and write a song based on an audience or a specific event..it always backfires and it’s not your most truthful work.
