We got to interview Andrew from Crystal Antlers. Read on to learn how Crystal Antlers connects with a crowd, what his favorite part about being on tour is, and find out what city he would love to live in if he could. Check it out here!
You have a new record coming out, that’s exciting! It’s been a while since your last record came out. 2011?
Yeah I think so.
How was the recording process for this album?
It was different. Jonny, our singer, built this studio in our garage where we recorded most of it. Having it there gave us all the time we needed so there was no pressure or time restraint which was different from the last one.
Wasn’t there a farm involved in creating your last album?
We didn’t record it at the farm. We went to Mexico for a month and rented a barn there and basically came up with a lot of material there. Then we recorded it at a studio in Long Beach.
What is your favorite part about being on tour?
I don’t know. I guess just meeting new people. New friendships. I guess just the opportunity to show off our new material. I definitely don’t like sitting in a van. Going to new cities and meeting people and checking out new venues and checking out tourist sites along the way.
What are your fans like? Do they get crazy at shows?
It’s kind of all over the place. We get older guys, older people. And we get young people too. It can get rowdy, too.
Have you ever had a fan do something crazy for you guys?
There were a couple. Some girl came to our show in Copenhagen and she wanted to sit on the stage and paint a picture, while we were performing, in watercolor. It was cool. We were thrashing away and she was sitting in the corner painting us. And it turned out awesome.
Any festivals you would like to play?
I don’t really know too many festival names. Not SXSW. I’m tired of that.
When you’re on stage, how do you get a crowd going?
We interact with them on stage a little bit. For me, it’s more about the music impressing them. I want the music to be tight and loud and for people to get into it through the music. And even before we start, we’re out there talking to the crowd to see what their interests are.
What are some of the musical influences for the band?
Probably jazz music, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, Bad Brains, and punk rock music.
Have you played in Atlanta before?
Yeah. We played at a different venue than The Drunken Unicorn. I love Atlanta. I would live there if I could.
Is their anything new happening for the band?
We’re working on some new music videos. We have some singles coming out. We’re also working with The Scientist on some stuff.
