Celebrating their 10th year as one of independent music’s most substantive bands, Louisville’s Coliseum return with their fourth full-length, the stunning Sister Faith, released on April 30, 2013. Expanding on the anthemic direction the trio veered toward on 2010’s highly acclaimed House With a Curse, Sister Faith’s 13 songs are the most dynamic and immediately captivating of the band’s career, bristling with galvanizing melodies at the collision point between punk and noise-rock.
We caught up with Coliseum before their tour hit the The EARL in Atlanta. Check out what they had to say about their dream gig, their new music and their plans for the remainder of the year!
Over ten years as a band, what has been one of your most memorable gigs?
Most of the shows are memorable in some way, but playing Oya Festival in Oslo, Norway in 2009 was especially cool. They flew us there at the end of a long European tour, it was our first time to Norway, we were treated like kings and played a festival the same day at My Bloody Valentine. The night before was Turbonegro’s Apocalypse Dudes 10th anniversary performance in their hometown. What could be any better? There have been tons of others as well… Any great show is really special and powerful.
What is your dream gig? Lineup? Venue?
I’m a complete DC fanatic, so it would probably be just about any show in the mid to late eighties in DC… Fugazi, Soul Side, Ignition, Gray Matter, Rites Of Spring, Swiz, etc. But maybe something like Fugazi (any time/album), Killing Joke (any time – especially now!) and Bad Brains (I Against I era). It could be anywhere – we’d be there!
You recently released Sister Faith. What makes this album unique in comparison to your other albums?
It’s the album I’ve been wanting to make and working toward my entire life. Each album is a snapshot of the time it was written and recorded, I’m not particularly interested in comparing it to our other records. It’s the one that’s current and that means it’s the most important and special to us. I think our playing and songwriting is the best it’s ever been and we’re very proud of Sister Faith.
How do you connect with your audience?
By putting our all into our shows, playing our best and trying to make it entertaining as well as a powerful experience. I also talk some on stage between songs, relating a bit about what might be on our mind or something directly relating to the album or tour or songs we’re playing. It can be a bit rambling at times, but having sincere communication with the audience is important to us and it’s part of what makes it a Coliseum show.
What bands/artists are currently on your playlist?
New records by Red Hare, Crime And The City Solution, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, Obliterations, Give, TV Freaks, The Night Marchers and others I’m sure I’m forgetting.
What are your plans for the remainder of 2013?
Lots of touring and lots of time at home. Living life to the fullest the best I can.
