Scarred But Smarter; life n times of drivin n cryin is a new documentary film that takes its name from the 1986 debut released by 688 Records. The documentary is about the veteran Southern alternative rockers Drivin N Cryin, and is directed by Eric Von Haessler. You can view trailers and teasers here: http://scarredbutsmarterdoc.com/test/
Von Haessler explains the genesis of this documentary:
“A long time ago in a place called Rochester, NY. I was a young radio producer at WPXY FM. One day back in 1991 the very first intern I ever had, Chris Kolchuk, handed me a CD called “Fly Me Courageous” by a band with a very strange name. He told me it was great and that I should listen to it when I got the chance. I looked at the cover art, then glanced briefly at pictures of band members with teased-out hair and frilly jackets, and immediately handed it back. ‘I’m not into hair bands,’ I snarled. He seemed disappointed. I indignantly walked away quite unaware that a bit further down the line I would spend over three years of my life documenting the career of that band, Drivin N Cryin.”
The world premier takes place March 22, 2013, at the Plaza Theatre in Atlanta, GA during the Atlanta Film Festival. Vocalist Kevn Kinney and lead guitarist Sadler Vaden answered questions for our 5GB interview:
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
Kevn Kinney: The Osmonds at the Wisconsin State Fair! They had really cool white fringe jumpsuits! Note to the new: the song “Crazy Horses” by the Osmonds is amazing!
Sadler Vaden: The first gig I went to was Farm Aid 1996 in Columbia, S.C. Neil Young & Crazy Horse headlined. I immediately started playing guitar after that.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
Kinney: I played with my punk band the Prosecutors opening for The Oil Tasters 1981. It was my first show so it was probably pretty exhilarating! You can get the Oil Tasters on iTunes and the Prosecutors’ first record just came out after thirty years. You can get it on the Drivin N Cryin website.
Vaden: I’d say my most memorable gig was this past year’s Tabernacle show.
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
Kinney: Probably the Allman Brothers with John Paul Jones of Zeppelin at the Warrens Haynes Christmas jam twenty year show! Amazing!
Vaden: Prince
Gig you would most like to play?
Kinney: I’d love to play Bonaroo
Vaden: I would love to play at Red Rocks Amphitheater
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
Kinney: Just me and Mr. Glen Campbell
Vaden: U2, The Who, Jimi Hendrix and Big Star
