Back in the day when someone even mentioned the word “Australia” normally a couple of things might come to mind: kangaroos, Steve Irwin, and Outback Steakhouse…and maybe Crocodile Dundee, if you are a product of the 80’s like I am. Certainly not the Land of the Hip Hop though (unless you are thinking’ of those kangas again). Fortunately for us Melbourne’s Iggy Azalea starting rapping at the age of 14 and was obsessed with rap from age 11 when she heard “Baby Don’t Cry.” Her obsession with Tupac led Iggy (whose real name is Amethyst), to move to America, the birth place of hip hop. In 2011, Iggy Azalea started uploading several freestyle videos that went viral on YouTube, especially when Perez Hilton discovered her first music video “Pu$$y.”
She recently announced that her debut album The New Classic, will be released within the first quarter of 2012, when she will also be announcing her record deal. She is playing Atlanta this coming Thursday at The Basement in Graveyard Tavern for a show that will surely leave its mark.
