The
Atlanta Local Music scene is always growing and there are many great Atlanta bands
out there, that have real potential to do well commercially. There
is a solid music community flourishing between 2 central hubs; Black Box rehearsal
studios near Little Five Points and Rehearse Too Much (RTM) near 85 and
Monroe Drive.The
main indie venues are The Star Bar, Nine Lives, and Variety Playhouse in Little
Five Points, The Dark Horse Tavern in Virginia Highlands (now called 10 High), The Cotton Club
downtown, The Roxy, in Buckhead, Smiths Olde Bar and Masquerade in Midtown,
The Echo Lounge and Earl in East Atlanta, and the Tabernacle downtown.
There
are several other venues around that also are of significance, but the
above venues are the most important places for a band to play to be seen
and to build up a following. They vary in size, styles and audience but
together make up an important circuit.
There
are three main radio stations in Atlanta that have local music programs. The
biggest, WNNX 99X [99.7 FM], used to run its 'Locals Only' show Sunday nights at
10.30pm, until they decided to put the show on the web, "on demand".
It can now be downloaded whenever you want - provided you are online and
want to sit in front of your computer for an hour !! It is still hosted
by local music mainstay Steve Craig.Better yet is the new show 'Sunday School' hosted by Jay Harren, Sunday Nights between 8- 10pm. As well as loads of indie and rare tracks, the show has a "Local Feature Of The Week". 99X claim to have broken several
bands in conjunction with giving some bands airplay during regular rotation. WKLS
96 Rock's [96.1 FM] show airs sunday nights between 9pm and 9.30pm. The newly revamped
Stage 96 hosted by English Nick has a better time slot - and spins
the bands that are playing during the upcoming week. They have also been staging weekly showcases, making them very supportive of local music. WRAS Atlanta Album 88 [88.5 FM] is the college
station and their Georgia Music Show airs between 5-7pm on saturdays. The 100,000 watt station is one of the largest commercial free college stations in the country and its indie format has a significant slice of the Atlanta audience.Continued here
