AMG Weekend Picks: Soulphonics, Decatur BBQ, Blues and Bluegrass Fest, Ken Ford and More!

Feel that folks? It’s the lack of unbearable heat in our fair city. Yup, that’s right – the bearable heat has returned to Atlanta. Which means that fall can’t be far behind right? If you stand still long enough in the early morning or late at night (which is more likely, right?), you’ll even feel the cool breeze that we’ve been missing for months now. In our opinion, this is a great reason to get out into the city and check out one of the plethora of gigs that we have lined up for you below. There’s even a great festival in Decatur with tunes and food that must be perfect for enjoying the late summer weather.

Thursday, August 18 – Leagues at Vinyl

A little bit of a supergroup of sorts, Leagues is made up of the talent that lies within Tyler Burkum (Grammy-winning Mat Kearney collaborator), Thad Cockrell (Caitlin Cary collaborator), Jeremy Lutito (Disappointed By Candy, Jars of Clay) and Mike Simons. They are sure to win you over with a line-up like that.

Friday, August 19 – Soulphonics & Ruby Velle at Vinyl

Atlanta’s favorite soul charmer Ruby Velle brings her snazzy Soulphonics to Vinyl on Friday night.

Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20 – Blue Waltz for Sean Costello Memorial Fund at Smith’s Olde Bar

The Last Waltz Ensemble (Atlanta’s talented group of musicians that play songs by The Band and Bob Dylan) get together for two nights to raise money for the Sean Costello Memorial Fund, in honor of the young musician who struggled with bipolar disorder and died too young just a few years ago.

Saturday, August 20 – 11th Annual Decatur BBQ, Blues and Bluegrass Festival at Harmony Park

Where else can you enjoy the great sounds of Will Scruggs, Flat Rock, Dappled Grays and Wasted Potential while tucking into the incredible BBQ of Black Tie Barbecue, along with local favorites Community Q and Fox Bros? Wash it down with brew by New Belgium Brewing Company, and you’re in heaven. And the event raises money for various awesome Decatur community bits and bobs, so you can’t go wrong.
