Happy post-holiday weekend Atlanta! Even though it’s a holiday weekend, there is no shortage of amazing shows to check out over the next few days! From rock and roll to funk and soul, there’s a little something for everyone this weekend. Check out our roundup and let us know what you’re looking forward to seeing!
Friday, December 26:
Roadkill Ghost Choir @ The EARL
Emerging fully-formed from the desolate heart of Central Florida, Roadkill Ghost Choir make unsettling, powerful American rock, Tom Petty by way of Radiohead and Cormac McCarthy. Set against Kiffy Myer’s ghostly steel pedal, singer and main songwriter Andrew Shepard triumphantly conjures an allegorical American landscape of drifters, specters and violent saints. Andrew’s brothers Maxx (drums) and Zach (bass) Shepard round out the rhythm section, and Stephen Garza handles lead guitar.
Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 day of show. Doors open at 9pm.
David Ryan Harris @ Eddie’s Attic
David Ryan Harris is on a quest that has an almost mythological dimension to it. Armed with a voice that falls somewhere between Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, songwriting that combines beautiful haunting melodies with sharp storytelling and guitar playing that is blues influenced and rock sharpened, David has been searching for the truth in music. And it is that combination of tremendous talent and devotion to the truth that immediately connects him to an audience. He invites us to join in and become part of the journey and as we accept the invitation we realize his songs are our songs too.
Tickets are $14 in advance, $18 at the door. Show is at 9:30pm.
Saturday, December 27:
Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics @ The EARL
Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics roots are embedded in the rich sound and history of Georgia soul, beginning with the early 50’s and 60’s R&B that became so well known around the world. Having performed countless gigs since 2005, and with a slew of 45rpm singles already under their belts, the band has already contributed heavily to the steadily increasing awareness of genuine rhythm and blues music that exists today. They pack clubs and festivals with their original brand of soul, all of which is written and recorded in Atlanta.
Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 day of show. Doors open at 9pm.
Davin McCoy @ Eddie’s Attic
Pain, suffering, and loss…three elements baked deeply into the fabric of love, or rather, a true love lost. These are the things of which the greatest artists of all time have feasted, in through their uniquely experienced and engineered pores, and out to the world après time served within the walls of the artist’s hearts and minds. Such are the autobiographical, painstaking roads traveled by Davin McCoy’s eloquently crafted, individually wrapped soulful pieces of art, his songs, tied together, so ever tightly, by a grief stricken fueled common thread, by cigarette stained fingers avec a not yet finished quarter left high ball. A personal compilation of emotions wrapped with and by a heart-wrenching bow known as McCoy’s sophomore effort Whiskey Sexy.
Tickets are $12 in advance, $16 at the door. Doors open at 7pm.
Swervocity EP Release Show @ The Basement EAV
Atlanta rock band Swervocity, comprised of brothers Ben & Will Martin, release their 100 Years EP live at The Basement in East Atlanta on Saturday, December 27th. Plus, Matt Lyons supporting.
Tickets are $8. Doors open at 9pm.
Sunday, December 28:
Kelly McFarling @ Eddie’s Attic
Kelly McFarling is a wanderer of wilderness and cityscapes. Atlanta, GA raised her in church choirs and baseball stadiums. She pays homage to those southern roots using a signature combination of clawhammer and traditional banjo playing. San Francisco gave her the inspiration to begin writing her own music and solidifying her original sound. With her band (Jonathan Kirchner, bass; Andrew Laubacher, drums & Tim Marcus, pedal steel and guitars), McFarling explores territory outside the clear influences of folk, old time, bluegrass and country, creating an authentic blend that is equally at home at firesides or festivals. Her music reeks of transitions, and the ups and downs of choosing a life of shifting foundations in a place that is consciously existing in anticipation of the next big shake. McFarling’s music, like herself, occupies a place between places.
Tickets are $10 in advance, $14 at the door. Doors open at 5pm.
