Atlanta metal heads, Wizard Smoke, are no strangers around town. They are at The Basement at Graveyard Tavern tomorrow, and they joined us for our 5GB series before their show.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
“Sesame Street: On Tour.” Eastern High School Auditorium, Bristol, Connecticut, 1987. The opening act was an old man in leiderhosen that was a virtuoso spoon player. I remember thinking “this is what drugs make you feel like” the whole time.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
We played on the side stage at The EARL a few years ago. That stage is about a foot off the floor, only our drummer fit on it, we had no idea how it would sound, but it ended up being the nastiest, most unhinged and most raucous show we’ve ever done. And I got drunk afterwards, holy hell, like call the cops drunk. Public intoxication drunk. Causing a disturbance drunk. Really, very quite tipsy.
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
Magilla the Gorilla at the Highlander, 2006. He plays standup bass in a big blue gorilla costume. Actually, I think it’s a real gorilla in there. We talked about Terri Schiavo at great length after he played a few Wall of Voodoo tunes.
What is the gig you would most like to play?
One of those European mega-metal festivals where they treat you like family and have Toblerone chocolates and the best beer you’ve ever tasted waiting for you in a green room, and are openly like “you like-a my seester? Please, you take her in de van and make ze love.”
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
Jethro Tull circa 1970, Wizard Smoke, Megadeth circa 1990, The Beatles circa 1963, Joe Jackson, Muddy Waters, Kingston Trio and finally, CCR.
Catch Wizard Smoke Friday, May 25th at The Basement at Graveyard Tavern
