Nothing better than some good ole’ bluegrass! The Rowan Cunningham Band have brought their fiddles with them to Atlanta and are playing tonight at Eddie’s Attic. They joined us for our 5GB before their show tonight.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
Bill Monroe at Club 47,Cambridge, Mass. our older brother Peter was Bluegrass Boy guitarist in Bill’s band at the time and this was Bill’s first time playing the club,having just arrived from Nashville,his hometown. Club 47 was a classic coffee house/legendary folk music scene in the ’60’s that every major folk/bluegrass/blues artist performed at, very prestigous.The location of the club is still going today but under the name Passim,where musicians play all the time.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
My brother and I as The Rowan Brothers,with our producer/manager at the time,David Grisman, opened for the Gratful Dead at the closing of the Fillmore West in 1972.David brought Chris and I out from Massachusetts where we grew up to the West Coast,where he introduced us to jerry garcia nad the other members othe Grateful Dead.He played steel guitar with us.Quite the rush, us being on stage and their 3000 fans going crazy!
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
Bob Marley & The Wailers at the legendary, and now long ago closed , the Boarding House, in San Francisco;a 200 seat room,where Bob Marley and his band were still undiscovered by the mainstream US market.He had just released his 3rd ablum in the states,’Natty Dread’ with the more rock influenced reggae for which he and his band became so famous for.
Gig you would most like to play?
Not So Hardly Strictly Buegrass festival in San Francisco-it’s a huge free event every October in Golden Gate Park with numerous stages and all styles of music, beyond Bluegrass.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
Would like to open for a Sting concert, at Carnegie Hall.
