Just from being in the local Atlanta music scene, I have heard about Nashville’s The Kingston Springs. I have heard about their heavy blues, folk, rocky top surf rock sound, their comparison to a young Black Keys, and the fact that they were asked to play such heavy-hitters such as Lollapalooza…..and then I saw and met them and realized that not only does this band deserve all the praise they are receiving, but they are some of the nicest young gentleman in Nashville. They are playing The Basement at Graveyard Tavern on Thursday, and it would behoove you to check this band out, before you start seeing them in an amphitheater.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
Most of us remember walking down the Broadway Strip in Nashville with our parents and hearing the honky tonk bands from the sidewalk. We were just young kids. These guys were dressed like cowboys, playin the hell out of a Lefty Frizzell cover at Roberts or one of the many other country bars.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
We’ve played tons of enjoyable shows, but we’ve seemed to always have the best time at house parties. They most definitely were not our best sounding shows, but there’s nothing more entertaining than being half drunk, drenched in sweat, and looking back at more than half your band in the crowd while you’re still playing your instrument.
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
Back at ACL 2011 we had the privilege of seeing Fleet Foxes from the side stage, topped off by a phenomenal performance by Arcade Fire. It was pure magic, but Ian begs to differ and says Buffalo Springfield at Bonnaroo was the best.
What is the gig you would most like to play?
We’ve always wanted to play a festival in another country, like Roskilde or Fuji Fest. It’s fun playing festivals and being part of a huge line up that almost always includes an iconic headliner. Plus we love being far away from home.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
Probably start the night off chill with Woody Guthrie and his toe tappin tunes, then hit it hard and raw with Link Wray and his Wraymen, and then finish the night off beautifully with a full set done by The Band themselves.
