The Head formed in 2007, when twin brothers Jack and Mike Shaw connected with high school friend Jacob Morrell and began performing and writing music in the basement of the Shaws’ home in the Atlanta suburbs. SPIN magazine’s review of Hang On said The Head had “mastered the beloved science of catchy, toe-tapping melodies plus rich vocal harmonies.” The Atlanta Journal Constitution said, “In a just world, the album would send these guys into the upper reaches of the pop chart. It might not sound like anything else on the radio today, but it has timeless charm, exudes youthful energy and the hooks come fast and furious.” Stomp and Stammer’s Jeff Clark said about The Head, “They play the kind of pure, perfect, punchy power pop that at this point you’d expect to hear only on Rhino box sets or obscure, decades-old records found in the Bomp archives, all heart-on-sleeve, superbly written, enthusiastically performed.” They are playing The Earl on Thursday, and joined us for our 5GB series.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
A James Brown concert at the Del Mar Fair in San Diego. I was 11 years old at the time.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
The best gig we played was probably either at the EARL in Atlanta last fall of 2011 or at the Radio Room in Greenville, SC this past April. Both shows had great lineups along with fun and energetic crowds.
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
Wilco in 2007 at Chastain Amphitheater in Atlanta. It was one of the first stops on Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky Tour. They played almost their entire catalog that night.
What is the gig you would most like to play?
We would like to play at the Cavern Club in Liverpool or at Cicero’s in St. Louis.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
Dream gig as in a gig we’d like to play, or dream gig as in a gig we’d like to see?
Our lineup for the dream gig we’d like to play would be for us to open up for Wilco or the Stone Roses.
Our lineup for the dream gig we’d like to see would be REM and Big Star opening up for the Beatles.
