You have to a pretty big set of cahones to submit a video to the DragonCon Music Video Contest, but then Atlanta favorites The District Attorneys have proven themselves not to be scared of a challenge. The band has spent the past year gaining a consistent following, and is headlining at Smith’s Olde Bar on September 2. The band’s Drew Beskin joined us as part of our 5 GB series.
What is the the first gig you ever went to?
I’m almost positive it was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles “Coming out of their Shell” concert. It was a live concert/show featuring the Ninja Turtles playing rock music which was the best of both worlds for my four-year-old self. I saw my first human concert at age five with my Dad when we saw U2 at the old Omni which was wild.
Best gig you have ever played/performed at?
I’m not sure if we have had our best yet but a few come to mind. The first time we played Star Bar, we opened for Jessica Lea Mayfield and Josh Joplin and we had a bunch of new songs and the show just felt right and its the show I compare all our other good ones to. We did our first tour this summer and we played Pianos in New York which went very well for us and it was a great experience playing outside Georgia, away from our comfort zone and we had a great crowd which always helps. The last time we played Smiths was a really great experience too.
Best gig you’ve ever been to?
That is a really hard one. I saw Rufus Wainwright with Neko Case at The Tabernacle a few years ago which was amazing. Oasis with Ryan Adams in Chicago when they went on tour together, which was a dream come true for me. Tallest Man on Earth at The EARL was a religious experience. Prince with Morris Day and the Time at Phillips was amazing too. I have seen Prince a few times, I went to a secret fan club show at the Tabernacle and Prince played “Party Man” from the Batman soundtrack and told the crowd not to tell anyone about it… I sure hope he isn’t reading this.
What is the gig you would most like to play?
We are hoping to play a few shows at SXSW next year and that is really important to us. Some festivals would be nice too; we like playing outside. Playing the Tabernacle has been a dream of mine for a long time so opening for anyone there would be wild… maybe Prince will call me.
If you could put your dream lineup on a gig, who would it be?
Rilo Kiley, Oasis and Pavement would get back together to do a tour with Tom Waits headlining and running the show. Tom would of course ask us to come along to be a part of one of the most random bills ever, but it would be amazing in my book.
