You already know that Atlanta is home to a slew of hard-working bands who make our town one of the best places to catch a live show. Some of them have made the trek out to the South by Southwest music festival in Austin this year, and here are just a few that we’re happy to see representing Atlanta. This is by no means a complete list of all Atlanta artists playing during SXSW, but these shows could very well feature your neighbor, your favorite bartender, or that band who rehearses down the hall at your space. We know they’ll make us proud!
1. The Black Lips
These local garage and punk legends are playing a party with a purpose: the Syrian Red Cross benefit show entitled “Our Heart Aches for Syria.” They will perform following Syrian artist and cult international legend Omar Souleyman.
Date: Friday, March 15 at Long Center for Performing Arts
2. The Coathangers
The all-girl quartet will be sure to charm the Texans with their signature rauc n’ roll and charismatic live performance. They’ll need that energy to keep the party going for multiple shows–but we know they can bring it!
Dates: Wednesday, March 13 at Holy Mountain Backyard and Friday, March 15 at Easy Tiger
3. Gringo Star
Their upbeat pop music will keep toes tapping into the night, and new fans drawn in by their Beatle-inspired name will be happy to discover their vintage British Invasion sound.
Date: Saturday, March 16 at Red Eyed Fly
4. Entertainment
After playing “the death of music” throughout the drawing rooms and German cabarets of Atlanta, Entertainment headlines a showcase that features an entire roster of dark underground acts. Obvious tip: You won’t see these guys during the day.
Date: Saturday, March 16 at the Austin School of Film
5. Royal Thunder
Receiving nods from NPR and Brooklyn Vegan, Royal Thunder will play the Metal Sucks showcase–with a show that will most definitely will not. This dedicated four-piece crafts some jaw-dropping progressive rock and alternative metal. Really.
Dates: Thursday, March 14 at the Dirty Dog Bar and Saturday, March 16 at Red 7 Patio
