North Carolina band of brothers, Sleepy Sun, have shared the stage with the likes of Arctic Monkeys and the Black Angels and recorded their latest album Spine Hits with Queens of Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal alumnus Dave Catching. Their music has the kind of muscle that makes you get feisty. They are playing 529 tonight and joined us for our 5GB series.
What’s the first gig you ever attended?
First gig I ever went to was a Mozart String Quartet in Salzburg, Austria. Although I was in the womb, I like to imagine it was the first music I’d ever heard, much less danced to.
What is the best gig that you ever played/performed?
So many gigs, I try to make every night the best.. But the very best shows are those where the connection with huge audience is strongest. Our first sxsw in Austin at the Mohawk, inside stage comes to mind. I can remember peeking through the barroom crevasses to make contact with people all the way in the back. And I could really feel them surrounding us with their warm ears and eyes, during a festival so polluted with noise.
What is the best gig you have ever seen?
One of the best shows I’ve been to was to see SWANS in San Francisco at the Regency Ballroom. The trance last nearly two hours, during which I travelled between both poles of my emotional being, lead forcefully through the musicianship of the most talented performers. Tubular bells, raucous guitars, and Michael Gira as the preacher; he hailed noise and condemnation to all those before him. It was power through music.
Gig you would most like to play?
I’d like to play the Bonnaroo Festival one day, or Coachella. Never been to either. Sounds like a nice communion.
What would be the lineup for your dream gig?
Perfect bill with living musicians? It’d love to play before the Rolling Stones while theyre still bopping around. Madison Square Garden?
